When Rangers were linked with Tom Eaves by Sky Sports earlier in the month, there was a minor feeling of disappointment from fans.

We’d spent almost half a season being linked with an English wonderkid, so an English League One striker was always going to feel a step down.

But would it actually be? At 26, Eaves is having his real breakout season at Gillingham. The towering 6ft5inches striker has 15 goals and tops League One’s scoring charts.

Eaves and co want to ply their trade in the Championship. But Rangers certainly pose an interesting proposition for anyone at that level.

His contract is also up at the end of the season. He’s ready to take a step up, but should that be at Ibrox?

Whilst I’m not convinced, I’m not underwhelmed.

The striker is proving time and again why Gillingham Chairman Paul Scally is desperate to keep him. He seems to be hitting the peak of his powers and could well be the answer to Rangers issues with strength in depth. Tom Eaves is a committed, powerful striker with neat feet and a neat finish.

He proved it again at the weekend, inspiring a comeback from 2-0 down with a neat finish after showing great control to take the ball down. Gillingham would go on to rescue a point against Wycombe.

In the absence of a third choice striker and while Kyle Lafferty searches for form, we could certainly do a lot worse.

Tom Eaves might not bring glamour, but he might very well bring goals.
