A deal for Feyenoord’s Danilo appears to be edging closer but there will be a few players at Rangers picking up the phone to their agents, just in case.

The 24-year old Brazilian is said to be getting offered a £39,000 per week salary which would make him one of the club’s top earners.

But it is another in Kemar Roofe whose position in the squad over the long term is most at threat by Danilo signing for Rangers.

Danilo deal could see Rangers end for Kemar Roofe

There are similarities between the two strikers.

Both can play as a central number nine or in support dropping deep and into the channels.

Then there is their respective finishing skills.

Kemar Roofe and Danilo can score goals of any type and will bring a clinical edge to Rangers attack.

The issue that every Light Blues fan is aware of is that Roofe struggles to stay fit and his injury history suggests another breakdown is always around the corner.

All Michael Beale can do is use him when he is available and, unlike previous seasons, not plan for him to be part of the squad.

Which is where Danilo’s signing for Rangers comes into play.

Roofe’s contract expires at the end of this season and it looks as though Danilo has been signed as his replacement for Rangers ahead of schedule.

It’s a big investment in terms of fee – a reported £6m – and salary, but the board obviously believes that he is worth it and worth having to pay Roofe as well.

The Jamaica international was our top goalscorer the last time we won the league, that is what he is capable of but that was over two seasons ago and a lot of missed games too.

Alongside Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Danilo, Roofe will now struggle to earn a new contract with Rangers unless he manages to stay fit for something like 40 plus games.

From what we have seen in the past, Roofe is the best finisher at the club, but it looks as though that mantle is about to get handed over and his £26k wage will be one less to pay next season.
