Rangers desire to sign a centre midfield playmaker isn’t exactly a secret. Between transfer rumours and Gerrard himself talking of his plans, it’s pretty nailed on we’ll be getting someone in come January. Someone like a Steven Davis or Charlie Adam might be perfect.
Experience is a necessity with Rangers lack of it hampering midfield performances in big games. We need someone to come in, grab games by the scruff of the neck and control things in the middle.
And whilst we need energy too, this position is more about creativity, leadership and goals.

All of which both players could provide plenty of. But if it’s between the two of them, then is it even a competition?
Steven Davis over Charlie Adam every time
Steven Davis might be a year Charlie Adam’s senior, but the Ulsterman looks more capable than the Scotsman.
Davis is still captaining Northern Ireland. Up until last year he was a key man in this Southampton side – who’re coincidentally struggling without him in the team. He remains club captain there. If the rumours surrounding Rangers interest are true, a move for Steven Davis is a must for Rangers.
As for Adam, you can’t help but feel his career is in decline. He lit up the Premier League for years, with a wand of a left foot and character to match.

But he hasn’t looked quite as effective over the last few years. He also suffered relegation with Stoke last year.
He might be touting a potential move, but that doesn’t mean Rangers should humour it.
If the experienced, creative midfielder void is to be filled by either Davis or Adam then there’s only one winner.
Come on home Stevie Davis. Sorry Charlie.
