Charlie Adam has announced his intentions to return North to Scotland in the January transfer window.
And the Daily Record have suggested the midfielder’s preferred destination is Ibrox.
An ex-Rangers player and ex-teammate of Steven Gerrard, on paper it might make sense. But Rangers should be shying away from the move for three main reasons.

Better options in same position
Namely, Steven Davis is a much better option that Adam in midfield. At 32, Adam is younger than the Northern Irishman. But 33 year old Davis fulfils that attacking playmaker role much more naturally. Adam isn’t going to be the one to get on the ball, dribble and get on to crosses at the edge of the box.
Davis on the other hand can be.
Not the player of recent years
There’s no doubt Adam’s form has dipped in recent seasons. He’s only made six appearances for Stoke this year and the fact he’s eyeing a return to Scotland shows how much his stock has changed. His time at Blackpool was immensely memorable and Adam will probably go down in the club’s history.
But he isn’t the same player.

At Liverpool things were more challenging and despite being a mainstay in the Stoke side, he sees himself out of the team. Rangers need hungry players at the club and I’m not convinced Adam can reignite things on the pitch. Even if he does have an affiliation with the club.
Is on high wages at Stoke
Adam is also on a meaty wage at Stoke. The creative midfielder is reportedly on £35k a week and it’s hard to say he’d merit so much up in Scotland. Whilst the Potters might be happy to pay a proportion of the bill, Rangers will get lumbered with most of it.
Would paying Adam £25kpw go down as shrewd business?
I doubt it.
