The Rangers transfer that ‘excited’ Barry Ferguson but he might not get to work with him

Rangers will be working behind the scenes already to sign the type of players needed to turn one off big results into consistency and silverware.

The Ibrox trophy room lacks the presence of Scotland’s big three, however, the foundations are slowly, but surely being laid in the shape of a new structure behind the scenes and the imminent takeover by the San Francisco 49ers.

A permanent Rangers manager will be appointed with Barry Ferguson doing his chances no harm at all after the dramatic Old Firm derby win with Patrick Stewart wanting a sporting director in before any decision is made.

This won’t affect recruitment though with players being bought for the club, not on the whim of the manager, a position already made clear in a lengthy interview by Stewart.

One such player is Lyall Cameron who Ferguson has already given his verdict on ahead of his pre-contract move to Rangers in the summer.

What did Barry Ferguson say when Rangers signed Lyall Cameron?

Nils Koppen was “buzzing” about the transfer, however, interim Gers boss Ferguson loved the Cameron deal:

“Delighted,” the Hall of Fame legend told Go Radio after Cameron’s transfer was made official. “He’s a player we have spoken about many of times.”

“Obviously it was Lyall and Luke McCowan, who has went to Celtic in the summer, they two were standouts last season [for Dundee]. Again, [Cameron] has just carried that form on and I think it is a brilliant piece of business.

“I’ve seen him plenty of times and I think he’s good enough to play at a club like Rangers. There is no doubt in my mind. 22 years of age, still his best football years in front of him and it is great to see that Rangers are looking at homegrown players from other teams.

“He certainly fits that bracket. I am excited to see him come in the summer. Rangers have managed to seal that deal and, as I said, I am absolutely delighted because I think he can become a very important player for Rangers.”

What other Rangers players did Ferguson speak about before returning?

Ferguson was a regular voice on the radio before returning to the club he loves and wasn’t afraid to stick his neck on the line.

It’s no surprise that he wants Rangers to sign Vaclav Cerny on a permanent deal, a costly one, but one that transfer guarantees from the 49ers Enterprises group might just help to get over the line.

He has also suggested that it is only a matter of time before bids of over £10m come in for Hamza Igamane with the 22-year old striker’s Old Firm winner only enhancing his reputation.

Add this to his first senior international call-up with Morocco and Ferguson could well be right.

Hopefully, he is right about the Scotland youth cap too, even if his Dundee derby performance suggests that Cameron must improve if he is to be a success in a lighter shade of blue.
