Rangers vice-captain Connor Goldson has waxed lyrical about Nathan Patterson, labelling him the ‘future’ of the club [RangersTV].
Patterson has reportedly been attracting a lot of interest from south of the border in recent times.
Man United [90min.com], Liverpool [Scottish Sun] and Everton [Scottish Daily Mail] have all been linked with him and a host of scouts representing English top-flight clubs are said to have watched him in action for Scotland earlier this month.
During a press conference on Wednesday, former Brighton player Goldson was asked if he had advice for the 20-year-old amid the speculation.
“Advice-wise, there’s not much I can give him,” he said [RangersTV]. “It’s his own unique situation that he’s in. It’s credit to himself and all the hard work he has put in over the year.”
“All I can say for this football club is that I think Nathan Patterson is the future of it. I think he’s an amazing player. Everyone I have spoken to about him speaks really highly of him. On and off the pitch, he wants to learn.
“I think it’s important for Nathan to play games and I think it’s important for this football club that he’s here for many years. As I said, I do believe he is the future. He is one of the best young kids that I’ve ever seen, especially defensively.
“The English Premier League is the biggest league in the world and at some stage in his career I know that Nathan will play at that level.”
Goldson waxes lyrical about Rangers teammate Patterson
Patterson has been getting rave reviews from coaches, fans and pundits since breaking through at club and international level, and this is major praise from Goldson.
As a Rangers fan, it’s likely that Patterson’s goal is to stay on at Ibrox for at least a few more seasons and help to deliver lots of silverware.
However, the reality is that he’s still Steven Gerrard’s second-choice right-back and given the lack of major sales in recent years, if a big bid lands in January, the board may well opt to cash in.
