Major development confirmed at Newcastle amid links to Rangers boss Gerrard

Newcastle United have confirmed that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach, amid reports linking Rangers boss Steven Gerrard with the role.

Gerrard has been widely linked with the Newcastle job since a high-profile Saudi Arabia-led takeover of the English club was completed earlier this month.

The Times claimed on Monday that he was on a three-man shortlist alongside Unai Emery and Roberto Martinez, but at that point, Bruce was still in charge of the Magpies.

His two-year spell as Newcastle boss came to an end on Wednesday morning, though.

An official update provided by the club stated that he had left by mutual consent.

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club,” said Bruce [Nufc.co.uk]

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Graeme Jones has been confirmed as interim manager ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace at the weekend but ‘the process of recruiting a new head coach is under way and an appointment will be announced in due course.’

Gerrard previously refused to discuss the speculation linking him with Newcastle.

“I don’t really react or get involved in any kind of speculation, especially when there’s someone who I have the utmost respect for sitting in that job,” he said [Daily Mail]. “Sitting in these positions, you know, I wouldn’t like people to be speculating about my job.”

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League table with just three points from their opening eight matches.
