The 10 seconds that show why Hamza Igamane must start ahead of Cyriel Dessers for Rangers

Barry Ferguson was handed an almost impossible job when he replaced Philippe Clement to take control of Rangers.

The statistics tell us that form hasn’t improved, in fact, it has nosedived with two goals being conceded in almost every game.

The anomalies, bizarrely, are the Europa League ties with Fenerbahce away from home and Athletic Club at Ibrox.

Ferguson has made the same mistakes as Clement domestically, but seems to have found something that works in Europe, there is one thing he has to change though.

The Hall of Fame legend seems to have a blind spot for Cyriel Dessers who was outshone once again by his younger teammate Hamza Igamane against Aberdeen.

Hamza Igamane shows why he needs to start for Rangers in Spain

Thrown on late against Athletic, Igamane held the ball up, carried it forward to relieve pressure off the defence and bought time for his teammates.

The ball that had been rebounding off Dessers like a rubber ball was sticking to the Morocco international.

In Europe, and against better SPFL opposition, the ability to control the ball is so important.

What Igamane also did, was take the only real chance that fell to him to get Rangers back into the game

Even then, he had to control the ball under pressure and beat three players to get the shot off.

The moment that proves Igamane is better than Cyriel Dessers

If ever a moment summed up why Rangers need to move on from Dessers, it came in the 96th minute at Pittodrie in a series of incidents.

First, Ianis Hagi played Dessers one v one with Ross Doohan, next, the Rangers No.9 fired what he thought could be the last chance of the game against the post.

Instead of recovering and getting into position for the second phase of the attack? The 30-year old did a knee slide, out his head in his hands and gave up.

Ironically, if Dessers had been more switched on, Jefte could have crossed it to Dessers, who was unmarked and free at the back post.

Whilst Dessers was doing his ‘woe is me’ routine, Igamane wasn’t constantly moving and looking to make a difference or provide and option for his teammates.

When Ferguson watches the game back, it’s 10 seconds that should see him make a choice that every Rangers fan would already make, Igamane over Dessers in Spain.
