Once-highly rated German midfielder Max Meyer has been released from Crystal Palace just months after being loosely linked to Rangers in the summer transfer window.
The former Schalke midfielder might only be 25, but he has been released from a reported £170k per week contract at Selhurst Park after failing to impress in England.
The London club took to Twitter to confirm Meyer’s departure and described his release as being by “mutual consent”.
“Max Meyer has left Crystal Palace Football Club by mutual consent,” reads a Crystal Palace statement.
“The German midfielder made 56 appearances for the club, scoring twice, since his move to south London in the summer of 2018.
“Everyone at Crystal Palace F.C. thanks Max for his efforts whilst with us, and wishes him all the very best for the future.”
Rangers links to Meyer emerged on online message boards with the player entering the last year of his contract but it was never reported in any major newspaper.
The potential move for a player once touted as the next big thing in German football had supporters excited but any belief that the Gers were interested was quickly extinguished.
Football blogger the Fourth Official would describe the suggestion Rangers were in for Meyer as “absolute nonsense”.
Whilst Meyer does not appear to be on Rangers’ radar there is one player the club have confirmed they are interested in this January.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard even addressed the situation as he described the Gers as being “extremely close” to a pre-contract deal.
