Stevie G was always going to learn on the job at Rangers – be patient

When Stevie G took the Rangers job, it was a move which sent ripples right through world football.
Here was one of the globe’s biggest clubs in turmoil, turning to one of the biggest sportsmen alive to rescue them. Gerrard had conquered Liverpool, England, Europe and the US during a pretty special playing career.
But he had no managerial experience. Save some time working with the Liverpool U18s. It’s quite the contrast to the real deal, as he has figured out during his time in Scotland.

Appointing Gerrard was a huge risk. We all knew that. But it is one which, for the most part, has satisfied supporters.
And whilst the baby has been roundly thrown from the bath water in the wake of the Killie defeat, there were always going to be teething problems.

Gerrard has got it wrong at times this season

Gerrard has fooled around with different formations, particularly on the road, to no avail. He has been criticised for team selection at times, namely the exclusion of Nikola Katic.
Stevie G even committed the cardinal sin of making a sub at a corner, moments before Peter Hartley equalised in the dying embers for Motherwell in August. These are just a few of the poor decisions made.
Changing it up for the trip to Kilmarnock was the wrong move too.

It has by no means been perfect. But it was never going to be. Gerrard got us into Europe, he has at least presented some resistance to Celtic, and he gave us a win over them in December.
Things are moving in the right direction, but we must be patient with them as they do. Gerrard is still learning too, and that can’t be easy when the world’s eyes are watching.
Or with a Rangers support that demand and expect so much.
