Steven Gerrard makes promise to Rangers fans ahead of Galatasaray clash

Steven Gerrard has made a promise to the Rangers supporters ahead of his side’s tough Europa League qualifier against Galatasaray, as captured by RangersTV.

The Gers have bounced back from dropped points at Easter Road last weekend with two excellent performances in 4-0 and 5-1 wins over Willem II and Motherwell respectively.

James Tavernier (2), Jordan Jones and Cedric Itten (2) were on the scoresheet at Fir Park on Sunday and speaking after the game, Gerrard guaranteed his players would give maximum effort against the Turkish giants, even though there will be no crowd there to spur them on.

“It’s a big shame [that the game will be behind closed doors] and I do feel for the supporters but we’ll try and give them a performance to be proud of,” he said, as captured by RangersTV. “We know they’re still with us and it is what it is in terms of the situation, we’ve just got to get on with it.”

“It’s a tough game. They’re a good side with good players but we’ll try and go and climb the mountain. We’ll leave everything we’ve got out there and we promise the supporters we’ll do everything we can to try and get the right result.”

Rangers were excellent on Sunday afternoon with the likes of James Tavernier, Scott Arfield and Jordan Jones putting in eye-catching individual performances.

It was a particularly impressive showing given the quick turnaround from the Europa League third-round qualifier in the Netherlands.

However, as Gerrard eluded to here, the quality of the opposition will be much higher on Thursday night at Ibrox.

Galatasaray aren’t quite the force they once were but they have an array of experienced internationals amongst their ranks and are favourites heading into the game.

Ibrox has been something of a fortress for the Gers in European competition since Gerrard’s arrival but the atmosphere generated by the fans has undoubtedly played a big factor.

There’ll be no helping hand this time around but with careful planning and a lot of endeavour on the night, progression to the group stages is certainly possible.
