Rangers will go into the Old Firm with Celtic at Ibrox this weekend without the vital experience of Allan McGregor.
They’ll also go into the first game of next season without him too. But now the attention will turn to who takes his gloves for the final game at Ibrox this season.
The obvious choice seems to be backup goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. But in his pre-match press conference, Steven Gerrard hinted that another keeper isn’t completely out of the running for a place in his starting XI.
“I’ll make that decision on Saturday [who comes into the side],” said Gerrard. “We’ve got two good goalies vying for that position but we’ve still got 48 hours before we need to make that decision.
“It’s a shame that Allan’s not available. He’s been very consistent for us all season, made world class saves. He’s worth a lot of points to this team and he’s helped us in Europe and certainly the other cup competitions.
“It’s a shame that he’s not available but thankfully we’ve got other good goalies to step in.”

That suggests that Gerrard has not yet decided on who will be between the sticks this Sunday. The favourite for the position has to be Wes Foderingham, but it’s clear we can’t rule Firth starting out.
It would also be the former Liverpool goalkeeper’s first game in a Rangers shirt since joining in January. And in the unlikely event Firth is given the nod this weekend, it would represent a true baptism of fire for the player.
