Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has opted to include Swedish defender Filip Helander in the side’s Europa League squad for the trip to Legia Warsaw.
The big Swedish international will replace new signing Brandon Barker – perhaps further evidence of the challenge the player faces to break into the first-team at Rangers.
The decision also makes a particular columnist look very foolish after the Rangers manager was criticised for the decision not to include Helander.
Rangers had previously replaced the big centre half with Barker earlier in the week, but UEFA rules mean two changes to the squad can be made up to 24 hours before kick-off.
Helander has now been added to the squad after the decision not to include him appeared in direct contradiction to comments the big Swede made about the Europa League qualifier [Football Scotland].
As a result, Evening Times columnist Mark Hendry launched a scathing attack on Steven Gerrard.
In a column for the paper, Hendry suggested Gerrard was escaping criticism for not including Helander comparing the situation to Neil Lennon benching £10m of signings in the Parkhead horror show against Cluj.
The two are almost certainly not one and the same and Rangers fans did not let Hendry forget it.
And now the trigger-happy journalist has suffered further ignominy with Helander making the cut after all.
The £3m Swedish international [RangersTV] is now in-line to be involved in the Playoff after playing 90 minutes against East Fife in the league cup at the weekend.
But Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic continue to play well together and there is no suggestion the duo will be broken up in Poland.
