Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has left £3million signing Filip Helander out of his squad to face Polish side Legia Warsaw in the Europa League playoff round – with winger Brandon Barker taking his place in the 22-man pool.

The Gers squad list was updated this morning on UEFA’s website after the deadline for registration passed at midnight last night and the Swede is a surprising omission.

Greg Docherty has also been removed from the squad as Gerrard’s side have to make do with only 22 of a maximum of 25 players on the A list as Andy King takes his place in the squad.

After playing 90 minutes in yesterday’s win over East Fife, Helander was likely to come into contention for a place in the side but will now remain at home.

Helander’s exclusion also means that it is almost certain the Niko Katic will return to the side on Thursday night alongside Connor Goldson at the heart of the Rangers defence.

Gerrard’s squad already has the likes of Matt Polster, Jamie Murphy and Jake Hastie missing from it and it’ll be interesting to see how Gerrard makes room for Helander should the Gers reach the group stages.
