The Dominic Solanke transfer rumours have dominated the headlines in recent days, and Steven Gerrard has given his own reaction to the link.
Solanke still hasn’t featured at all this season for Liverpool. Despite a loan move being blocked for the striker by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the summer, Rangers looked set to go in for him next month.
The likes of Tom Eaves and Fran Sol have also been linked as alternatives next month. Rangers desperately need another striker to compete with Alfredo Morelos and the disappointing Kyle Lafferty.
Gerrard, however, spoke in the Daily Mail and cooled talk of a potential move for England Under-21 star Solanke.
“I haven’t heard Dominic Solanke say he wants to leave Liverpool.
“I haven’t heard Liverpool say they want him to leave, so there’s nothing really to say about it.”
Is the Rangers manager holding something back?
As much as Gerrard was clearly looking to cool down a move for the striker, there could easily still be something there.
He most certainly didn’t rule out a move for the forward, and seemed keen to keep things quiet for now. With the amount of speculation regarding Solanke these days combined with Rangers’ efforts to get him in the summer, there has to be something in the rumours.
He would undoubtedly be a class above Lafferty and would instantly rival Alfredo Morelos for the number one jersey.
Liverpool splashed out £3million to take the youngster from Chelsea back in the summer of 2017, but his impact on Merseyside has been minimal. So far, he’s only managed one goal in 27 appearances for Liverpool. It doesn’t sound too impressive, but only five of those outings were starts.
There remains Premiership interest in the Liverpool forward too. Rangers’ title-rivals Celtic have also been linked with him in the past. This is a sutation where the Gerrard factor could help Rangers get a deal over the line.
The manager’s comments certainly shouldn’t overly-concern Rangers fans. He refused to rule out interest, and seems to just be taking the pragmatic approach to the media.
