Pedro Caixinha’s Cruz Azul may have just lost the title, but he now wants to scupper Rangers’ January plans.

Yes, it was Caixinha’s big day yesterday as he closed in on Cruz Azul’s first Mexican Premier League title in 21 years.

Yet, despite reaching the playoff final against Club America, they lost 2-0 on aggregate after a poor defeat last night. That means it all ultimately ended in heartache for the Rangers flop in dramatic fashion.

Now, however, the Portuguese manager is looking to scupper the Gers’ transfer plans by going for Fran Sol, according to The Sunday People (16/12). The Willem II front-man has netted 15 goals in 18 appearances for the Eridivisie outfit this term. He’s also been linked with both Rangers and Celtic this week.

Yet, considering he’s in the final year of his contract, this is likely to bring plenty of suitors his way. One of them appears to be Caixinha’s Cruz Azul side, who failed to score in their two-legged final.

Caixinha has wanted Sol all year

Caixinha actually wanted to bring Sol to Mexico earlier this year, but has so far failed to land his man. This is likely to mean that he’ll go for him again as his contract nears its end.

There’s been no formal offer made for the Spaniard, who is tearing it up in Holland. It’s also unclear as to what the forward would prefer to do once his Willem II contract expires. Playing in Europe next season with Rangers could hold increasing temptation given how far the club went in the Europa League this season.

On the other side of the coin, however, Mexican clubs can offer their players a lot more money than Rangers can in Scotland.

Dominic Solanke and Tom Eaves have also been linked with Steven Gerrard’s Gers this season. There’s also the likes of Florian Kamberi at Hibs who could be worth a shout if Rangers decide to spend big.

Should Sol be the man that Rangers go for, however, they can expect stiff resistance. One of the main competitors, however, will most certainly be Caixinha.
