Rangers are set to reward veteran trio Allan McGregor, Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis with new deals after superb seasons for the club, Steven Gerrard has confirmed.
The Ibrox boss said new deals for the three stars were “on the horizon” and said the club want them around “longer than come the end of the season” [the Herald].
The three stars – who have a combined age of 108 – are central figures in the Rangers squad and have shown no signs of slowing despite all being in their mid-to-late thirties.
It would signify a major investment and statement from Rangers to reward the trio with new deals, and it’s not any less than they deserve for impressive seasons.
Allan McGregor, 37, has been electric between the sticks since coming back to Ibrox last season, and Steven Gerrard revealed last week that he has a clause in his contract which offers the option of another year [Evening Times].
This means that should McGregor play enough games his contract will automatically roll over into next season.
As for Jermain Defoe, also 37, the striker’s contract is set to expire with Premier League Bournemouth come the end of the season.
The legendary England striker has consistently reiterated his desire to stay at Ibrox [Sky Sports], and it now looks like he is going to get his wish.
Steven Davis, 34, who is approaching the British cap record with Northern Ireland, has consistently shown his value in the middle of the park and is playing amongst the best football of his career.
Signed once his contract expired at Southampton following an original January loan deal this year, he is a class act on and off the field and the former Rangers captain is the fulcrum of Gerrard’s side.
You won’t find many Rangers fans who disagree with the decision to offer the trio new deals, and the news comes after the club tied down assets Nikola Katic and Ryan Jack on improved contracts last month.
