Reported Rangers target Bongani Zungu has been given emphatic backing by South African football fans with the Ibrox club reportedly “closing in” on his signature [Scotsman].

The defensive midfielder is reportedly interesting the Gers to the tune of £3.5m after the relegation of his current Amiens side from Ligue 1 was confirmed.

Rangers fans have been a little bit apprehensive about the news considering that Zungu is a bit of an unknown quantity in these parts.

But the Bafana Bafana international is very highly regarded in his home country.

The 27-year-old midfielder started his career in South Africa and won two South African Championships with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Transfers to Vitoria de Guimaraes in Portugal and Amiens in France have followed but there is no crowd who knows Zungu better than the South African one.

The midfielder has made 29 appearances and scored four goals for his country on top of starring in the South African Premier Division.

It’s safe to say the Bafana Bafana are suitably buzzing about the concept of Zungu joining Rangers and linking up with Steven Gerrard.

The South African fans rate the 6ft midfielder very highly.

Rangers’ reported interest in Zungu comes after the South Africa international saw a loan deal with a €5m option to buy collapse with La Liga side Mallorca in January.
