Rangers are reportedly “closing in” on a £3.5m (€4m) move for South African international and Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu.
That’s according to English football journalist Joe Crann, who wrote an exclusive on the story for the Scotsman.
Crann also claimed at the beginning of July that Gerrard had his heart set on the South African, and Rangers could have the collapse of a €5m La Liga deal to thank for securing the player’s signature.
According to this Soccer Laduma story shared by Crann, back in the January transfer window Zungu travelled to Spain to finalise a loan to buy deal with La Liga side Mallorca.
The 27-year-old underwent a medical with the Spanish outfit and looked set to sign on the dotted line before Amiens pulled the plug.
The Ligue 1 club could not line up a suitable replacement in time and the transfer was called off.
This Soccer Zela story suggests that Mallorca were willing to pay €500k upfront with a €5m option to buy in June.
Football journalist Joe Crann is followed by the player on Twitter and describes himself as a “South African adoptee”.

All of this points to the journalist having solid information on Zungu, with his Scotsman report also suggesting the player is eager to follow up the move.
“It’s thought that a long-term deal is on the table waiting for Zungu should the two teams eventually come to an agreement,” writes Crann, “with the Bafana Bafana international eager to make the switch to Scotland and play UEFA Europa League football under Gerrard next season.”
