Lawrence Shankland is a name that keeps cropping up everywhere at the moment. And it’s no wonder – the prolific Ayr United striker can do no wrong.

The striker has scored 50 goals in 50 starts for the Honest Men. He banged in another two last night as Ayr beat Alloa 3-0 and went to the top of the table. Shankland has scored 12 in the Scottish Championship already this season

The performances of Shankland haven’t gone unnoticed down south either. Reports in the Scottish Daily Mail yesterday, as quoted at HITC, suggest both Swansea and Sunderland are ready to move for the forward.

But if he goes down south, will Rangers have missed a trick?

Rangers appear eager to sign another striker in January. Following Sunday’s awful result against Aberdeen, a lot of the fingers have been pointed at a lack of quality depth in that position. Morelos was suspended, Lafferty was cup-tied, Sadiq didn’t step up.

Financially, a move for the former Aberdeen striker is more than viable. Shankland is also only 23. And if this isn’t enough to convince fans, then maybe the fact he’s one of them just might be.

Shankland was at Ibrox for the Spartak Moscow game on Thursday and has made no secret of his allegiance to the Light Blues.

If there’s interest, that might just put Rangers in the driving seat for his signature. It’s not the first time there has been speculation either.

He’s certainly proving his worth in Ayrshire and in the second tier, but is Shankland of high enough quality to make the grade at Ibrox Stadium?
