Should Rangers interupt reported Celtic move for Paddy McNair?

Recent reports have suggested that Celtic are interested in signing Middlesbrough defender and bluenose Paddy McNair [TEAMtalk].
These reports have intensified after the Daily Record suggested Celtic are ready to bid £5m for the former Manchester United star.
But with the Northern Irishman’s allegiance being to the south side of Glasgow, is it a player Rangers should be interested in signing as well?

Besides from the fact McNair could prove a solid solution to a problem position, the centre back also provides a higher resale value than the likes of Martin Skrtel [Daily Record].
At 24, he is already playing at a very high level and could develop into a top player over the next few years.

The defender would also do well to join the Ulster contingent at Rangers. Kyle Lafferty, Steven Davis and Jordan Jones are all Northern Irish internationals currently at the club.
The only stumbling block to any move is the multi-million-pound fee being bandied about by the reports.
Could Rangers really afford to shell out £5m for the centre-half even before the club have began to offer him wages?

Whatever the case, Steven Gerrard has spoken candidly about the need for another centre half [Evening Times].
And just like we did with Joe Aribo, it’d be another psychological blow to nab Paddy McNair from under the nose of our rivals.
