Rangers defender John Souttar put in a heroic performance as Scotland finished their UEFA Nations League game with victory over Poland.

Whilst the Scotland national team didn’t manage to progress to the tournament’s knockout round, the late 2-1 victory over the Poles has staved off relegation from UEFA Nations League 1.

But whilst it wasn’t to be for Scotland after Portugal and Croatia played out a 1-1 draw, it was a night to remember for Tartan Army fans as Rangers defender John Souttar came up trumps in Warsaw.

Scotland record late win in Poland

Scotland took the lead in the match when John McGinn scored his 20th goal for the country, usurping Ally McCoist’s national team record of 19 in the process.

After Kamill Piatkowski had equalised just before the hour mark, John Souttar found Andy Robertson with a stunning long-range hanging cross for the Liverpool star to net the winner.

This was after Souttar, 28, had made a tremendous goal-line clearance in the first-half and put in a commanding defensive display at the heart of the Scotland backline.

The performance of Souttar even draw acclaim from Michael Stewart, the pundit describing the defender’s contribution as ‘incredible’.

But it’s not just the one-time Ibrox trialist who has been praising the Rangers centre-back as John Souttar earns the acclaim of the national press.

Rangers star John Souttar hailed in Scottish press

The Scotsman rated John Souttar a quite stunning 9/10 for his Scotland contribution against Poland in Warsaw.

The newspaper claims ‘the Rangers’ centre-half is making up for lost time as a Scotland mainstay now’ and hailed the first-half block and late assist for Andy Robertson.

John Souttar was also hailed by the Edinburgh Evening News, who praise the 8/10 centre-back’s ‘heroic shift’ and labelled the Rangers defender’s performance ‘sublime’.

The Ibrox star was branded ‘physically and technically strong throughout’ by the Daily Mail, who hailed Souttar’s cross as ‘sumptuous’ and his defending as ‘sensational’.

The Herald would also give John Souttar a quite stunning 9/10 ranking after the Scotland defender ‘put his body on the line time and time again’ in Poland.

With John Souttar ‘composed throughout’ the famous old Glasgow outlet described Souttar’s assist for the eventual winner as a ‘sensational cross’.
