Aberdeen boss and former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes says Aberdeen back “a lot” of the Ibrox club’s statement on the SPFL average points proposal for Scottish football.

The Dons gaffer was speaking on Clyde One’s Superscoreboard in the immediate aftermath of the decision with the Pittodrie club set to finish 4th under the SPFL proposals.

The Gers have said they “expect” other member clubs to back the resolution and McInnes has said he believes that taking our time is the right thing to do.

“The problem we have is that we just don’t know [what is going to happen] and it’s such an important decision that’s going to have to be made,” said McInnes [Clyde SSB 09/04].

“I think we’ve got be really considered with this and it all seems a bit rushed.

“I have to agree so much with Rangers statement and what they’ve come out with, I think a lot of what they’ve said in the statement is what we believe as well.

“I spoke to Dave Cormack after the meeting and he gave us a brief update but I think for us it’s such an important decision and I just don’t think we need to be making it now.

“The UEFA executive committee are meeting on the 23rd of April and I don’t think we need to make any decision before the outcome of that meeting.

“We feel that we deserve the chance to finish 3rd, Hearts deserve the chance to stay up, Rangers deserve the chance to catch Celtic, Celtic deserve the chance to win the league properly.”

The comments of McInnes come after Hearts chairperson Ann Budge also namechecked Rangers [Hearts] and the club’s proposed member’s resolution in the wake of the SPFL’s proposals.

McInnes’ comments would suggest that as it stands Aberdeen will join Hearts and Rangers in vetoing the SPFL proposals, which have largely been presented with prize money as the carrot for clubs.

In order for the proposals to pass the SPFL need 75% of Scottish Premiership clubs to agree on them, meaning only one more club needs to disagree for them to fail.
