Ross County star Michael Gardyne is under investigation by the SFA for the use of offensive language against Rangers star Alfredo Morelos.
Ex-Celtic youth Gardyne sparked frosty scenes in Dingwall as he lambasted Morelos for his reaction to a dangerous challenge from teammate Iain Vigurs at the end of the first half in Rangers’ recent 4-0 win.
Rangers players such as Connor Goldson and James Tavernier responded angrily to the incident whilst Gardyne appeared to be booked by referee John Beaton.
According to STV journalist Raman Bardwaj, the SFA are to investigate Gardyne for a “homophobic slur”.
The incident was discussed at the end of the match between Rangers and Ross County with Steven Gerrard saying the word used “doesn’t belong on a football pitch”.
The Ibrox gaffer also challenged Ross County to investigate the situation.
“What was apparently said doesn’t belong on a football pitch,” said Gerrard [Glasgow Times].
“There are campaigns for this sort of stuff to be eradicated out the game and we want to be at the forefront backing these campaigns.
“But as I say this wasn’t one of my players so it’s not really for me to deal with.
“I wanted to know if the referee heard what my players heard. He said he never, so from there I just moved on and went to do my half-time team talk and focused on the game.”
Ross County boss Stuart Kettlewell also promised to “get to the bottom” of the incident himself.
The alleged incident also came during a week were clubs across Scotland, including Rangers, had been supporting the Stonewall’s Scotland Rainbow Laces campaign which seeks to challenge homophobia in football.
Rangers fans also expressed frustration with broadcaster Sky Sports for instead appearing to criticise the reaction of Alfredo Morelos with regards the incident during their coverage.
