Former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson should be a frontrunner to replace Malky Mackay as Ross County manager.

The Staggies have taken the decision to sack the 51-year-old Scottish manager after a nine-game winless run leaves them 11th in the Scottish Premiership, level on points with bottom side Livingston.

With the Dingwall club’s season in the balance, all attentions are now focused on who Ross County will appoint as manager with Kevin Thomson certainly a name doing the rounds.

Whilst there is nothing concrete surrounding links to Thommo, the former Rangers midfielder has been mentioned in lists and in talk of bookies odds as a potential Mackay successor.

As things stand ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon appears the frontrunner, whilst the likes of Scott Brown, Callum Davidson and even Neil Warnock have been mooted.

Could Ross County take Kevin Thomson chance?

In the same week that Kevin Thomson reiterated his availability as a young manager, Ross County could benefit from a bright young coach who has heady ambitions in the game.

Having previously claimed he has ambitions to take the job of Rangers manager, that dream remains quite some way off so long as Kevin Thomson remains out of work.

Retweeting a pitch from a fellow coach within Scotland making himself “available”, it’s clear Thomson retains an ambition to take charge somewhere and make his mark.

Out of work since leaving Kelty Hearts at the end of 2021/22 – having just guided the club to the League Two title – there have always been murmurs of Kevin Thomson links elsewhere but nothing has ever came to fruition.

A risk worth taking

Cutting his teeth in the Rangers Academy, that extensive post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, gave an insight into the mind of the 39-year-old.

A progressive young coach who wants his team to play out from the back with a high-press and dominant style, it would be a big change from Malky Mackay’s lacklustre set-up in Dingwall.

But perhaps a breath of fresh air is exactly what Ross County need and with the club heading for relegation, a punt on Kevin Thomson could be a masterstroke as they step up their hunt for a new manager.

The former Ibrox midfielder remains a positive and likeable figure in the Scottish game and let’s hope he gets his chance somewhere soon.
