Fabrizio Romano has issued a major update on Newcastle United’s hunt for a new manager and Rangers fans will be delighted with his news.

Steven Gerrard has been extensively linked with Newcastle since a high-profile Saudi Arabia-led takeover of the club was completed earlier this month.

The Magpies’ hunt for a new boss officially began earlier this week when Steve Bruce left his position as head coach by ‘mututal consent’ and The Times had earlier claimed that the Gers boss was one of three leading contenders to replace him, alongside Unai Emery and Roberto Martinez.

However, former Roma, Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca is now the favourite to be appointed.

According to respected journalist, Romano, an agreement between the Portuguese and Newcastle is ‘getting closer’.

He tweeted to his 5.5 million followers soon after midnight last night:

‘Newcastle job. Talks will continue today between Paulo Fonseca and Magpies board – the agreement is getting closer on a long-term contract. Not completed yet but negotiations ongoing.

‘Fonseca prepared to accept if Newcastle board will give the ‘green light’.

Romano claims Fonseca close to agreement on Newcastle job

There has been a lot of talk about Gerrard potentially being lured away from Ibrox by Newcastle, but he dismissed the speculation after a Europa League win over Brondby on Thursday night [BT Sport] and Romano’s update suggests the Premier League club are looking in a different direction.

Fonseca is a much more experienced manager than Gerrard, although if he were to be appointed, it would be his first crack at British football.

Rangers fans will be delighted that more speculation about the club’s manager looks set to lead nowhere.

There’s nothing that Gerrard has said thus far that suggests he isn’t intent on seeing out his current deal, which runs until 2024.

In other news, Rangers fans have praised Allan McGregor for a hilarious interview following the EL win over Brondby.
