Reputable French football news outlet L’Equipe have confirmed that Rangers and Amiens have reached an agreement over midfielder Bongani Zungu.

The South African international will now seek to agree personal terms over the transfer which L’Equipe believe to be worth €4m, or £3.6m.

This backs up the earlier claims of journalist Joe Crann who has followed the deal closely and who wrote an exclusive in the Scotsman claiming talks between Rangers and Zungu had opened.

This would represent Rangers’ most significant outlay of the transfer window with the midfielder bringing Ligue 1 and international experience to Ibrox.

Zungu has also previously been a South African league champion with first club Mamelodi Sundowns so also has experience winning a domestic league championship.

The 27-year-old has made 27 appearances for the South African national team, scoring four goals, and is very highly rated by the Bofana Bofana support.

Whilst his game time over the last few seasons has been limited by injury, Rangers have been linked to a range of central midfielders over the course of the transfer window.

They appear to have settled on Zungu and negotiations will now begin over what L’Equipe believe to be a four-year deal.

Zungu has also turned out for Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes and joined Amiens for a reported €2m in 2017.

A proposed €5m move to La Liga side Mallorca also collapsed in January after Amiens couldn’t sign a suitable replacement in time.

French newspaper L’Equipe also revealed earlier this week that Rangers linked Brest midfielder Haris Belkebla is set to sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 club.
