Rangers have been linked with a move for Hearts centre back John Souttar and his performance in today’s routine Rangers win at Tynecastle was always going to come under the microscope.
Today, it was the club’s chance to see the 22-year-old Scotland international in action. I don’t think anyone would’ve been blown away by Souttar’s day as Rangers won comfortably.
Souttar was up against it from the off as Rangers’ midfield movement caused Hearts all kinds of trouble. Both Souttar and Berra struggled with Rangers late runs to support Jermain Defoe.
The Hearts defence was regularly sliced open as a neat team performance by Rangers saw Heart off 3-1. John Souttar was powerless to resist.
The 22-year-old Scotland international is a highly rated prospect and for a couple of million, could prove a shrewd signing by the club.
But he clearly has some way to go as he struggled to impose himself on this match. The feeling is that if Rangers invest in the player now, they will reap the benefits in the future.
Plus, anything that gets Craig Levein this annoyed proves that the club’s on to something by trying to secure Souttar’s signature.
