Reported £8m investment could leave Rangers legacy for wrong reasons

As Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers once again stumbled against Hearts, the final strands of the Rangers support started heading for the proverbial exits.

Reports have suggested that Rangers paid a combined £8m for the two players under Michael Beale in the summer but the return has not backed up the expensive outlay.

In fact, both Cyriel Dessers (£4.5m) and Sam Lammers (£3.5m) are on course to leave a Rangers legacy for all the wrong reasons and permanently be remembered as amongst the biggest flops in our history.

We’re now several months into the tenure of both players and Rangers fans have not seen enough from either player to convince them these transfers are going to be a success.

With Cyriel Dessers hooked at half-time against Hearts and Sam Lammers met with sarcastic jeers following his substitution in the second half, the signs are increasingly ominous.

Both players are now teetering on the verge of losing the Rangers crowd and – as Michael Beale found out earlier in the month – it’s incredibly hard to win them back.

Whilst Jack Butland and Abdallah Sima have been the stand-out signings of a heavily criticised summer transfer window, the others have either shown brief glimpses of their talent or have not had the opportunity to convince fans either way.

Brazilian striker Danilo – the other expensive investment from the summer – certainly looks to have something about him and there are high hopes about the ex-Feyenoord man.

Ecuador International Jose Cifuentes arrived with much hype, but is currently sidelined, whilst ex-Chelsea talent Dujon Sterling has also struggled with injury.

Fans know what they’re getting with Leon Balogun and Kieran Dowell – another who has suffered injury issues – has shown glimpses of what he can offer.

But Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers have not shown Rangers fans anything near enough, despite their extensive exposure to the first team, to convince them of either player.

Now on the verge of falling into the same lists which are propped up Carlos Pena, Tore Andre Flo, Filip Sebo and Joey Barton, both players threaten to leave a legacy at Rangers for all the wrong reasons.

One Hearts rival – extensively linked with Rangers – also showed both players up at Ibrox.
