The Swiss international striker also claims that current Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst would “never” have loaned him out had he been in charge at the start of the season.

The 25-year-old striker cost a reported £3m deal last summer [Scotsman] and the ex-FC St Gallen star went on to have a small but important impact on the 55 title-winning squad.

But as the Gers signed Fashion Sakala this summer Ced the Ted was shipped out on loan to Bundesliga relegation fodder Greuther Furth.

After the Dutch coaching contingent came into Ibrox in November, they opted to recall Cedric Itten in January but after a flurry of games upon his return the player has scarcely been seen.

Cedric Itten opens up o mystery Rangers illness

Opening up on a mystery illness, believed to have been brought on by Covid-19, Cedric Itten hopes the worst is behind him and he can go on to have an impact at Rangers after all.

Coming off the bench for four minutes against Motherwell, this was the striker’s first appearance since the Scottish Cup win over Annan Athletic in February.

“The whole illness thing really blew my mind. I wanted to eat, but I couldn’t, I only ate soup and lost a total of four kilos,” said Cedric Itten [Blick].

“I didn’t know what kind of illness it was.

“Neither the Rangers’ club doctors nor my girlfriend’s father, who is also a doctor, could find an explanation.

“It’s possible it was the aftermath of a Covid infection – I previously tested positive, even though I’ve been vaccinated three times.

“I was then in quarantine for ten days, felt good again, was back in fitness training before it knocked me out again.

“It’s been a difficult time mainly because the training deficit at this point in the season means it is almost impossible to catch up, but I hope to play now.

“The manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, told me that he would never have loaned me out if he had been in charge at the beginning of the season.”

No-one is bound to be more frustrated with this situation than Cedric Itten himself and let’s hope he can fully recover ahead of the new campaign and really show Rangers what he can do.

Meanwhile, Rangers are set to wear special changed kits in their clash with RB Leipzig.
