Reported Rangers target Carlos Mendes Gomes lit up a seven-goal thriller between Morecambe and Oldham Athletic in EFL League Two on Saturday.

The Scottish Sun reported earlier this month that the Gers had made contact with the Shrimps about Mendes Gomes, who is out of contract in the summer.

The 22-year-old, who spent time with Atletico Madrid as a youngster, has been in impressive form since the link emerged.

He scored a fine goal and notched an assist in a 4-1 win over Scunthorpe in midweek and was outstanding once again in a 4-3 triumph over Oldham on Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers-linked winger showed superb pace to chase down an overhit pass and fire his side into the lead in just the 5th minute with a driven finish from a tight angle.

He then assisted Aaron Wildig for the Shrimps’ second goal with a good cross and put his side 4-1 up in the 53rd minute with a cool finish in a one vs one situation with opposition keeper Laurie Walker.

Oldham fought back well with goals in the 78th and 88th minutes, but the hosts did just enough to hold on for all three points.

Morecambe are fourth and now just one point behind Bolton, who are occupying the final automatic promotion spot.

Mendes Gomes now has 15 goals and four assists for the season.
