Rangers Women hammered Motherwell 5-0 on Wednesday night to continue their outstanding start to the 2021/22 SWPL 1 season.

Malky Thomson’s side were looking to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 Old Firm defeat in the SWPL Cup on Sunday and they did so in style at Auchenhowie.

Rangers piled the pressure on the visitors right from the off, with Zoe Ness striking the crossbar in the early stages and the breakthrough finally came in the 23rd minute.

Brogan Hay found Scotland international Brianna Westrup in the area, who lifted the ball over Kyhm Ramsay to give the hosts the lead.

Rangers then struck twice in the space of two minutes on the stroke of half-time with Rachel McLauchlan and Ness both netting to make it 3-0 and ensure there was no way back for Motherwell.

With the game won, Thomson took the opportunity to make a number of substitutions in the second period, but two more goals were bagged late on to add gloss to the scoreline.

Kayla McCoy tapped home Chelsea Cornet’s cross to make it 4-0 and Lizzie Arnot completed the rout in the final minute of normal time.

25-year-old Scotland international forward Arnot, who Rangers signed from Man United last year, has now scored eight times in eight SWPL appearances this season.

Rangers are still unbeaten and are top of the table, two points ahead of second-placed Glasgow City.
