Rangers warned £5m summer transfer should ‘absolutely’ not happen

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes there is ‘no chance’ Malik Tillman moves to Ibrox on a permanent basis with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich looking for £5 million.

The sheer size of Tillman’s price-tag is splitting many Rangers supporters into two distinct camps as the summer approaches. Do the Gers simply stump up the fee, following an excellent debut season at Ibrox for the USA international?

Or, with so many other areas in need of reinforcement, would devoting such a sizeable chunk of their transfer budget to one player be the footballing equivalent of buying a shiny new 4K TV when your entire kitchen is fully of faulty appliances?

Tillman has 12 goals and five assists since joining Rangers on loan from Bayern. But Boyd believes that rumoured £5 million fee – via The Times – is more than a little on the expensive side.

Will Bayern Munich loanee Malik Tillman stay at Rangers?

“You have Malik Tillmann, currently on loan from Bayern Munich. Would you pay £5 million to get him on a permanent deal? Absolutely no chance,” Boyd tells the Scottish Sun.

Rangers were linked with a potential replacement last week in the shape of QPR’s Chris Willock. Mick Beale, however, is playing down rumours of a summer raid of his old employers.

A more likely addition may be Morgan Whittaker; the January target once again high on Rangers’ wishlist after struggling for game time south of the border at Swansea City.

Boyd, meanwhile, believes there are ‘only four’ members of the current Gers roster who should be guaranteed a place in Beale’s squad in 2023/24.

“Right now, I’d say only four players would be stick-ons for a place in Beale’s squad beyond the summer,” adds the two-time Scottish Premiership champion.

“James Tavernier, Nico Raskin, Connor Goldson and Todd Cantwell are those men.

“The rest? I am not sure about — for various reasons. Some are out of contract, some are getting to the end of their careers, and others are just not good enough.”

As things stand, Ryan Kent, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Filip Helander, Alfredo Morelos and 41-year-old goalkeeper Allan McGregor will all be free agents on July 1st.
