Rangers U18s hammered St Johnstone 6-0 at the Rangers Training Centre on Monday afternoon in their first match back following the summer break.

After a condensed 2020/21 CAS League campaign, the Gers won the title at this level in May.

However, since then, a lot has changed both in terms of playing personnel and staff.

Many of the players who were central to the league win have moved up to the B team and are preparing for the 2021/22 Lowland League season and coach David McCallum has gone with them, leaving Cameron Campbell in sole charge of the age-group side.

After all that disruption, the Young Gers could have been forgiven had they made a slow start in this friendly against the Saints.

Instead, though, they swept the Perth outfit aside in impressive fashion.

A Rory Wilson strike had the hosts 1-0 up by the interval and then the floodgates opened in the second half, with Jack Roberts (2), Tyler Pasnik, Ryan Duncan and Jack Harkness all getting on the scoresheet.

Four players involved in the matchday squad – Duncan, Kristian Webster, Zak McKay and Greig Allen – only signed professional deals at the club last week.

Allen, who was handed a debut start, was signed from Premiership rivals Hearts for an undisclosed fee after being monitored by the club’s youth scouts for some time.

It’s a very positive start to the season for this group and it looks as though Campbell has some very talented new recruits on his hands.

Meanwhile, an Ibrox legend is convinced that the senior recruitment team at Rangers have landed the ‘bargain of the summer’.
