Ibrox legend Barry Ferguson has claimed that Rangers have already ‘landed the bargain of the summer’ by snapping up John Lundstram on a free transfer.

The signing of the former Sheffield United star was confirmed on Monday and he’s already made his Gers debut.

He played the first 45 minutes of a pre-season friendly defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday afternoon and largely impressed, with Steven Gerrard asserting that the 27-year-old ‘cruised it’ for large periods.

Rangers fans will have been encouraged by Lundstram’s first showing and former skipper Ferguson thinks the club have played a blinder.

“The signing of John Lundstram on a free transfer from Sheffield United underlines it (that complacency isn’t setting in at Rangers),” he said [Daily Record].

“Believe me when I say, this is a proper football player they’ve just got their hands on and it shows that Gerrard is not allowing anyone at the club to take their eye off the ball.

“Put it this way, he would have commanded a very hefty fee if he was still under contract so it looks very much to me as if Rangers have landed the bargain of the summer already.”

Ferguson knows a thing or two about playing in midfield and it’s hard to argue with his verdict here.

Lundstram is a player who turned out regularly in the Premier League over the past two seasons, while he’s also a good age, is powerfully built and has an eye for goal.

Therefore, to bring him in for nothing early in the window, beefing up an area of the squad that needed strengthening in the process, looks like something of a masterstroke.

Of course, previous exploits don’t guarantee future success, though, and an EFL club expert has dropped a warning about the new Ibrox arrival’s attitude.
