Rangers and Celtic will meet in Airdrie this Sunday in the inaugural Women’s Glasgow Cup, marking the Glasgow FA’s first steps into women’s football,
The Old Firm will meet in the curtain-raiser as Rangers look to pick up where they left off last season as they lifted the title in a historic Invincible campaign.
Rangers’ Women’s and Girls Football Manager, Amy McDonald, said: “We are delighted to be a part of a historic launch match for the Women’s Glasgow Cup. It is an exciting step forward as we look to continue to grow the game for both players and supporters across the country. This showcase match should be a fantastic afternoon for all ages to enjoy a competitive fixture between two of the top teams in the country.”
Rangers have been busy in the transfer market this summer with Malky Thomson adding several new faces to his squad ahead of the new campaign.
With Rangers also competing in the Women’s Champions League for the first time this season, the Light Blues will be looking to make their mark on the continent.
Hopefully, there’s a good crowd attend the inaugural Women’s Glasgow Cup clash and the season can get off on the right foot for Rangers.
Glasgow FA president Eric Riley is hopeful the new competition can continue to help grow the women’s game in Scotland and give a platform for club in Glasgow to showcase their talents, saying: “Thanks to the committed and generous support of our sponsor Lord Willie Haughey and his company, City Facilities Management Holdings (UK) Ltd since 2010, the Glasgow FA has played an increasingly valued role in the sporting life of the City.
During this period, the Glasgow FA have provided the platform for the children and youth of the City to participate in a range of annual events including the Glasgow Futsal tournament the Primary School Football Festival, the Under 11 Football Festival and the Under 16 Development League, not to mention the Glasgow Cup itself.
“We are delighted to now provide the platform for the talented women of our city to display and develop their careers in this new competition.”
