Rangers will discover their opponents for the Last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup this weekend.
The draw will be made live on Premier Sports on Sunday evening after Hearts face Inverness Caley Thistle at Tynecastle, with Rangers guaranteed to be seeded.
Joining the Light Blues with seeded status are Celtic, Aberdeen, Hibs and St Johnstone, as well as the three as yet unconfirmed group winners with the best records.
The other remaining eight clubs will be unseeded.
In Steven Gerrard’s three previous seasons in charge, the Gers have reached the semi-finals, the final and the quarter-finals, losing to Aberdeen, Celtic and St Mirren respectively.
Last season’s 3-2 defeat in Paisley was a painful one, particularly as the Hoops and the Dons had already been knocked out and the path to the final had looked relatively clear.
Clearly, the priority was very much 55 last season, but the manager will now be determined to secure more than just the league title and given that only four victories are required to lift the Premier Sports Cup, due to their late entry, it’s a very winnable competition.
Rangers drew third-tier club Falkirk at this stage last season and a similarly kind draw would be welcomed here.
Ties are due to be played on the weekend of 14/15 August.
Ahead of the new season, Rangers have set the tone with an impressive off-field victory over Celtic.
