Pre-contract Rangers signing Fashion Sakala has revealed that he turned down a host of Premier League, Ligue 1 and La Liga sides to sign on at Ibrox.
The pacey forward was a man in demand ahead of the summer window but Rangers have pulled off a major coup to snare the striker from Belgian side KV Oostende.
Speaking to Zambian media in his homeland, the 24-year-old forward also discussed the role Steven Gerrard played in convincing him to join Rangers over the likes of PSG and Lille.
Not only that, but deeply religious Sakala also prayed to God for guidance and the path to Rangers was the one he was urged to take.
“Honestly, I had a lot of options,” said Sakala [QFM].
“I had teams in the Premier League, three teams from England. I had two teams from France, in Ligue 1, the top two teams in the table right now [PSG and Lille].
“I also had a lot of options from Spain, in La Liga.
“But before making any decision, I always pray. And God showed me the direction to choose Rangers.
“I believe that’s the best decision that I’ve made. I believe it is the right decision because looking at how Rangers play, I will fit in quickly.
“The kind of style they play is almost the same way I play, and also how the coach explained he wants me to play is exactly how I play.”
Gerrard’s role as Rangers manager has helped attract a whole new calibre of player to the side and it was a conversation with the Liverpool legend which tipped the scales in Rangers’ balance.
Sakala claims that Gerrard’s opinion on the forward “touched my heart” as Sakala praised the Gers manager.
“Honestly, this is a time when I feel like God has really answered my prayers,” said Sakala.
“Looking at the profile of Steven Gerrard, the first time he called me he told me that I’m a very good player and I have a lot to achieve.
“And looking at his profile, him telling me that really touched my heart.
“I felt like I have a journey to follow.
“He gave me a few names of big players he played with and I couldn’t believe that he was comparing me to those big names, that’s how he sees me playing.
“From the first time we started talking, I could tell that he really believes in me.”
Sakala continues to impress in his homeland and scored his 14th goal of the season in Belgium as his Oostende side played out an eight-goal thriller.
