Sam Lammers will undergo a medical at Rangers on Wednesday morning after Mick Beale’s side agreed a £3.5 million fee with Serie A outfit Atalanta.

Given that the former PSV Eindhoven striker has not kicked a ball for La Dea since August 2021 – farmed out on loan at Empoli, Sampdoria and Eintracht Frankfurt in the last two seasons – it hardly came as a surprise when The Sun reported that Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini would not stand in his way.

Rangers have since agreed a £3.5 million fee with the Serie A side (Daily Record).

Sam Lammers – Atalanta’s forgotten man – should now become Beale’s fourth signing of the summer already, Tuttomercatoweb reporting that a medical has been scheduled for Wednesday morning as the Dutchman prepares to join Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling and Jack Butland at Ibrox.

Rangers close in on Sam Lammers deal

Whether Lammers succeeds in Glasgow, meanwhile, depends on whether Rangers can coax out the mercurial talent that once encouraged Atalanta to invest £8 million in his services.

Lammers scored 19 goals for Heerenveen in 2018/19. Since then, he’s found the net on just six times in nearly 60 appearances.

Lammers will arrive at Ibrox looking to rebuild his reputation. There is a reason why Atalanta are willing to take a £5 million loss on a forward who could be joined at Rangers by another Italy-based marksman who made his name in the Netherlands, a £4.2 million deal for Cremonese poacher Cyriel Dessers also edging closer.

“If he is a first-choice striker for Rangers, he’ll score a lot,” former Gers defender Sergio Porrini tells the Scottish Express.

“Cyriel has big shoes to fill in Alfredo Morelos. It’s not easy to replace a player who has done so well, but I’m sure Cyriel can more than replace him. He’s the sort of player the fans will love. He’s played in a number of good leagues and scored goals. He’ll be confident in his ability.

“He can score more than 20 goals, I’m sure of that. Fifteen goals would be the first target. But, if he starts well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score more than 20.”
