Rangers target Jordan Jones fails to impress against Celtic

With speculation picking up about him moving to Rangers, there wasn’t much to like about Jordan Jones against Celtic yesterday.

The Northern Irishman has been linked with a move to Ibrox in January. This comes after a failed attempt to sign him almost a year ago when Graeme Murty was in charge at Rangers.

Steven Gerrard is looking for additions in January to help bolster his squad’s challenge to Celtic. Jones has been at Killie for over two years, and has continuously impressed with his dazzling footwork and quick change of pace.

Despite that, his big chance to impress against Celtic saw him woefully fail to make anything happen. He was on the ball enough to make some sparks fly, but he struggled to get the better of Mikael Lustig in what was a hugely disappointing display.

The left-winger has been on Rangers’ radar for some time now, and he likely still is. Gerrard won’t determine whether to sign him or not based on one performance against Celtic, but a positive one would’ve helped him.

Jones not the only one to under-perform

Overall, nothing went right for Kilmarnock on the day. They were pounded from the first minute, and Jones was up against it despite how often he saw the ball for the Ayrshire men.

Jones has been on Rangers’ radar for some time now. According to the Scotsman, Killie value their winger at £1million, with Rangers failing to stump up the cash last season.

This season, Jones has disappointingly failed to score in 23 outings for Steve Clarke’s side. He does have four assists to his name in all competitions, but as Killie’s main creative spark. that’s not exactly highly impressive.

Rangers already have some real quality down the left in Ryan Kent and Glenn Middleton. If Jones is to come in and push the pair of them, he would have to increase the level of his end product.

Despite having a positive start to the season, one that included an assist against Rangers, Jones’ form has withered away. He looked like a positive gamble to take earlier on this season, but would he still be worth parting a seven-figure sum for?

Not on yesterday’s showing.
