A Rangers swoop for dynamic Blackburn Rovers player Joe Rothwell is ‘almost certain’ as far as the Championship club are concerned, according to a Football League World report.

The Gers were initially linked with Rothwell earlier this month by the Scottish Sun.

That report claimed that Rangers were leading the race to sign the 26-year-old and planned to ‘get serious’ in the winter transfer window.

Rothwell’s current deal is up at the end of the season and therefore, he’s available on a pre-contract in January.

Earlier this week, Football League World also suggested that the Gers were leading the race before naming Norwich City, Bournemouth, Southampton and Brentford as some of the other clubs with interest.

Then, on Tuesday morning, the same outlet reported that officials at Blackburn see Rothwell to Rangers as a foregone conclusion.

It’s suggested that a move is ‘almost certain in the near future’, with a pre-contract deal ‘being closed in on’.

It certainly makes sense that Rangers would already be thinking about strengthening in midfield for next season.

Steven Davis and Scott Arfield are both due to be out of contract in the summer, while offers are likely for both Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, and a suspected heart condition has ensured summer arrival Nnamdi Ofoborh is yet to make his debut.

Rothwell has played in all 12 of Blackburn’s Championship fixtures so far this season, scoring once and notching four assists to help them to ninth in the table.

He’s a dynamic midfielder, is a good age and could be a solid acquisition.

Meanwhile, a Rangers star has hit out on social media amid criticism.
