Rangers supporting striker continues overseas nightmare following derby defeat

Rangers supporting striker Lawrence Shankland featured for Belgian side K Beerschot VA in their weekend derby defeat to rivals Royal Antwerp FC, with the 2-1 scoreline pretty much condemning the side to relegation.

Beerschot is currently rooted bottom of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on 16 points with only four matches remaining, and they are seven points away from safety. With tough matches to come against Club Brugge and Gent, relegation looks probable.

It’s fair to say that Shankland, a boyhood bluenose, has suffered Euro hell during his relatively short time at the club.

Rangers were once linked with the player following his success at Dundee Utd [DailyRecord], but a deal never materialised.

Following a goal-laden spell in Scotland, Shankland made the move to Belgium last summer for a fee believed to have been £1m, excellent business for Dundee Utd.

It hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far for the player, with only four goals scored during his time at the club so far.

Many would have thought he was going to thrive on the continent, but it obviously hasn’t clicked for whatever reason. A relegation battle isn’t going to fill him with confidence either.

There were talks of Beerschot looking to offload the striker in January, just five months after buying him, but nothing come to pass and he will remain with the side until the end of the season.

Could we be seeing Shankland in Scotland again soon? only time will tell, but if Beerschot does get relegated, then they may decide to cut their losses and accept a decent offer in the summer.

It looks unlikely that a move to Rangers would be on the list, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst will look to bring in his own targets.

In other news, former Rangers star Gordan Petric has had his say about the Ibrox side’s last 16 Europa League opponents.
