Belgian club Beerschot are looking to sell Rangers-supporting striker Lawrence Shankland, just five months after signing him, according to the Daily Mail via the Scottish Sun [08:39].

Shankland grew up a Rangers fan and was pictured at Ibrox as recently as 2018, during his time with Ayr United, for a Europa League clash against Spartak Moscow.

The Gers were credited with interest in him during the 2018/19 season [Scottish Sun], after his 2019 move to Dundee United [Daily Record] and again in the summer of 2020.

Nothing ever came of the links, though, and in August, the Scotland international decided to leave Tannadice and head overseas for a new challenge.

He signed a three-year deal at Beerschot, who reportedly paid £1m to sign him [90min.com].

Shankland struggling in Antwerp

However, things haven’t gone according to plan for him so far in Belgium.

Beerschot are rooted to the bottom of the Pro League on just nine points and Shankland has only scored two goals and registered one assist from 16 appearances across all competitions.

He’s clearly found it difficult to perform in a struggling side and it’s being reported that Beerschot are already looking to move him on.

It’s suggested that the Antwerp-based club are keen to cut their losses and bring in a replacement with more experience of the league, putting SPFL clubs on ‘red alert’.

Rangers-supporting striker could return to Scotland

It would be no surprise if Premiership clubs were queuing up with offers for Shankland following this news.

The Scotland international has 142 senior goals to his name from just over 300 appearances and plenty of managers would love to bring in a striker with that kind of record.

It’s unlikely that Rangers would move for him, though, even if star striker Alfredo Morelos were to be sold this month.

It seems clear at this point that after extensive scouting in the past, the recruitment team at Ibrox simply weren’t convinced by him.

Meanwhile, Kris Boyd believes a 25-year-old Gerrard signing’s days are ‘numbered’ at Rangers.
