Rangers cult hero Clint Hill returned to Ibrox on Saturday, to take part in the legends game against Liverpool.

The centre-back played for the likes of Stoke City, Crystal Palace and QPR in a long career in the English club game, before making the switch to the Gers in 2016.

He was past his prime by the time he reached Glasgow and only stayed at the club for one season, but he left a lasting impression upon the fans.

Hill scored an impressive six times in 32 outings in Light Blue [Soccerbase], including a late equaliser in a league game at Celtic Park.

The 40-year-old only retired in 2018, following a stint with Carlisle United, and he was named on the bench for yesterday’s 3pm kick-off.

After being subbed on by Alex McLeish, Hill was typically robust at the centre of defence, at one stage sending Luis Garcia to the ground in a heap after catching him on the ankle. He also thwarted Steven Gerrard’s attempts to get on the scoresheet with some forceful blocks and challenges.

The current Fleetwood Town assistant manager was quick to assert before the game that he in no way considered himself a Rangers legend, despite his participation in the charity event, and he took to social media after it to state that it had been a ‘privilege’ to play.

The post was extremely well received by Gers fans, with many praising the former defender for his words and his contribution to the club, despite the brevity of his stay.
