Rangers forward Kemar Roofe scored a wonder goal against Standard Liege in the Europa League group stage last season and it has been celebrated by their official UEFA Twitter account.
The video on Twitter shows Roofe shrugging off four players on the rain-soaked pitch before spotting the keeper off his line, the forward has a shot at goal from just inside his own half and the ball soars into the opposition goal for arguably one of Rangers greatest ever European goals.
The Europa League Twitter account is running ’12 days of golazos’ following on from Christmas and Roofe’s stunning strike is at number two.
There were instant calls for the goal to be awarded the Puskas Award, an annual award that rewards the best goal of the year. Unfortunately, the cut-off date for the official FIFA Award was two weeks before Roofe scored against Standard Liege, meaning it could not be considered.
Nevertheless, it was still a wonderful goal, and the fact it is still being celebrated over a year later is a testament to how good a strike it was.
The Jamaican international was signed by Steven Gerrard last summer and was an integral part of the side that went the league season unbeaten as we strolled to the title with ease.
The player has suffered from a few injuries in his spell with the side, and he has missed the previous four matches due to a knock, yet he has scored six goals in 14 league appearances this term [TransferMarkt], a more than respectable record.
Keeping the 28-year-old fit could be key as the club aim to retain their league title this season, he has scored some crucial goals for the side over the previous 18 months and Giovanni van Bronckhorst will want him fighting fit for the second half of the campaign.
