That wonder-goal of Kemar Roofe’s in Rangers 2-0 Europa League win over Standard Liege won’t be considered for this year’s FIFA Puskas Award – because it misses out on the deadline.
There’s been some confusion over the news that Roofe’s wonder striker from his own half won’t be considered for the FIFA Award which celebrates the globe’s greatest strikes.
But Roofe’s 55-yard wonder strike won’t be considered because the cut-off date for entries passed on October 7th – the goal in question came on October 22nd.
It seems a bit strange that a goal which was scored in 2020 won’t be considered for the award which is handed out at the beginning of 2021.
Moreover, it seems stranger that an award handed out in 2022 for the best goal in 2021 could actually be one scored in 2020.
Kemar Roofe’s wonder strike is still in contention for next year’s award but because it missed the deadline by 15 days it isn’t on the shortlist this year.
Instead you can have a look at the FIFA Puskas Award nominations HERE with a total of 11 strikes making the shortlist with supporters invited to vote on their favourites.
To get on the shortlist for the award this year – which is part of FIFA’s The Best Football Awards – you also had to impress a star-studded panel of football royalty.
Shortlisting the nominees for this year’s awards included Brazilian legend Cafu, Man U and South Kores hero Park Ji Sung, and Ivory Coast legend Yaya Toure.

These are just three of an incredible ten-man team of ex-players who’ve worked with their female equivalents to draw up a shortlist for all the award nominees across the annual prizes.
Speaking of “The Best”, leading Rangers figures have taken to social media to pay tribute to a footballing legend who tragically passed away this week.
