Rangers missed an excellent opportunity to cut the gap at the top of the league table to just one point as they drew 2-2 against Motherwell, despite Celtic dropping points to Hibs earlier in the afternoon.

A two-goal advantage at halftime should have been enough for the Ibrox side to see out the match and claim all three points, but errors that have plagued us since the winter break crept into the game and the Steelmen snatched a point.

The one saving grace from the match was the continued excellent form of Alfredo Morelos, who scored and assisted during the tie.

Alfredo Morelos continues his fine Rangers form as stats show he was the key man

The Colombian has looked like a different player since Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived at the club in late November. Under Steven Gerrard, he was tasked to play deep and bring others into play, which obviously meant a sacrifice with regards to scoring goals.

Gio has made him the focal point of the attack and it has played out better than anyone could have thought, with Morelos netting 11 goals in 15 appearances. This also includes missing matches due to international duty so the numbers could have been even better.

Five key passes were made throughout the tie, and he also hit the woodwork once and missed a further big chance, proving that with a little bit more composure, he could have had a hattrick [SofaScore].

The 25-year-old has arguably been the side’s most important player post-Gerrard and with his current contract expiring in the summer of 2023, Gio and Ross Wilson will need to act sooner rather than later to tie him down.

Any future success for the Ibrox side depends on Morelos being at the club.

In other news, three main talking points emerged from the disappointing Ibrox draw against Motherwell which could damage Rangers title ambitions.
