Rangers vs Motherwell: Three main talking points emerge from Ibrox draw

Rangers continued their poor league form with a 2-2 draw against Motherwell at Ibrox in what was a massive opportunity missed due to Celtic’s result earlier in the afternoon.

They drew 0-0 with Hibs which gave the Ibrox side the chance to close the gap to just one point and although we took a two-goal lead through Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala, Motherwell roared back in the second half to steal a point.

There were of course plenty of talking points from the match to discuss and here are the three main ones that emerged from the result that could have a big say in where the title ends up.

Allan McGregor needs a spell on the side-lines

There is no question about it, McGregor has been one of the club’s finest ever keepers, but this season looks like it is a campaign too far for the 40-year-old.

Mistakes have been rapidly creeping into the keepers game this season, as evident during the matches against Hearts and Ross County. Add to this the fact he could have prevented the two Motherwell goals on Sunday but due to error and bad defending the result didn’t go Rangers’ way.

It is looking increasingly likely this will be McGregor’s last season at the club and as we are chasing another league title, sentiment shouldn’t play a part and the manager should give Jon McLaughlin a chance between the sticks for the next few matches.

Rangers fail to take advantage of a Celtic slip-up

With the title advantage being held by Celtic, a 0-0 draw with Hibs was a major setback and gave the Gers a great opportunity to cut the gap to just one point.

Racing into a two-goal advantage and seemingly coasting to the three points, the demons that have plagued us since the winter break came to the fore yet again.

It was another key weekend in the title race and as time goes on, you have to wonder just how many opportunities we will fail to take.

Alfredo Morelos continues to shine

Despite the defence and McGregor being at fault for the two Motherwell goals, the Gers star man continued to impress. Having scored the opener, Morelos turned provider for the ever-likable Fashion Sakala to net the second and have the Gers on easy street.

The Colombian is in the form of his life, and it must be frustrating that his efforts aren’t being rewarded with maximum points in the league.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst must tie him down to a long-term deal as soon as possible to avoid potential suitors swooping in this summer and nabbing him for a bargain.

Hopefully, he can continue this fine run of form over the next couple of months.

Rangers take on St Johnstone in Perth on Wednesday evening as they have a quick turnaround to banish the result at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 to remain on course for a historic SWPL title.
