Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has said that football is “not important” right now as the world battles the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking amid an enforced league shutdown which leaves questions over league positions, titles and relegations up in the air, the veteran forward has urged a sense of perspective.
Whilst what happens with the football season is at the forefront of many supporter’s minds, there are much bigger battles being fought up and down the country.

“To be honest, there are more important things happening in the world than football,” said Defoe [talkSPORT].
“People are dying every day which is such a sad thing, it puts things into perspective and you think, you know what, football is not important at all at this moment in time.
“The most important thing is the people who are actually suffering and the families that are losing loved ones.
“Of course we are all missing the beautiful game. I am missing the Rangers fans and, like I said before, my team-mates and hopefully, we will be back playing soon.”
Defoe’s comments are aimed at giving people that perspective as the battle appears to wage on over the title.
Rangers responded to the issue concerning the title amid Celtic’s calls to be awarded the title early if the season is cancelled both officially through Neil Lennon and various media cheerleaders.
However, with the country braced for an explosion of coronavirus cases in the coming days Defoe is eager to highlight the true issue we’re all facing.

Rangers took part in the special #clapforcarers movement as the club continues to lavish support and praise on our NHS.
Rangers’ recent campaign to promote government guidelines amid the outbreak has also highlighted the incredible role health workers are playing in the crisis.
