Rangers are set to land a substantial cash reward from UEFA following their win over Standard Liege in Europa League Group D.

The Gers triumphed 2-0 at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Thursday night, courtesy of a first-half penalty from James Tavernier and a spectacular long-range strike from Kemar Roofe in injury time.

It was a fourth consecutive European win for Steven Gerrard’s side, following qualifying victories over Lincoln Red Imps, Willem II and Galatasaray.

The Gers had already earned over £4 million in prize money by qualifying for the group stages and will now receive financial rewards each time they record a win or a draw.

With the Times recently reporting that UEFA have informed FAs of imminent minor cuts to the prize fund, the exact amount set to be received by Rangers for their win in Belgium isn’t confirmed at this time.

However, according to published UEFA figures, each group stage victory is worth €570,000 (approx. £517,000).

That sum is higher than the club secured for any player sale this summer, with Greg Docherty, Matt Polster and Ross McCrorie (initial loan deal) all leaving Ibrox for less.

The Rangers board will be hoping there are plenty more wins to follow in Group D, with the next fixture against Lech Poznan at Ibrox next Thursday night.

Gers supporters stepped up in the club’s hour of need by selling out virtual season tickets despite the financial uncertainty brought to many by the global health crisis.

Those funds helped Rangers to splash out on multiple signings this summer and a successful Europa League run would see them win back a considerable percentage of that outlay before Christmas.
